Transboundary Control Ruminant

Foot and Mouth Disease in Ruminants

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals. The disease was initially described in the 16th century and was the first animal pathogen identified as a virus. The transboundary spread and significant economic impact associated to FMD, triggered authorities worldwide to deploy integrated control measures under the frame of National Control Programs.1

Traditional FMD vaccines contain defined amounts of one or more chemically inactivated preparations of a seed virus strain blended with a suitable adjuvant and excipients. According to WOAH, commercial FMD vaccines should comply with important criteria:

  1. Formulated with sufficient antigen and appropriate adjuvant to have a minimum potency level of 3 PD50 [50% protective dose]
  2. Provide 6 months of immunity after two initial vaccinations given 1-month apart
  3. Vaccine strains are selected based on antigenic relationship with circulating strains.2
