Ammo CURB®

Ammo CURB® Mold Inhibitor

Ammo CURB® is a low-cost feed preservative for processed feed ingredients, complete animal feeds and total mixed rations (TMR). Available in dry and liquid formulations, Ammo CURB is a mono-acid preservative and may be added directly to complete feed, feed ingredients and TMR to help maintain stability of feed during relatively short-term storage.

How does Ammo CURB work?

Mold and mycotoxin contamination of grain and feed ingredients has existed since grain was first cultivated. Livestock and poultry producers started using propionic acid for feed preservation in an effort to control mold and prevent the formation of mycotoxins. Ammo CURB is a buffered propionic acid, concentrated to a standard potency and used for feed preservation. It works by disrupting the multiplication of many common mold species. Ammo CURB acts as a mold inhibitor in grain, feed ingredients and finished feed formulations.

What causes mold and mycotoxins?

Modern production practices and increased acreage appear to be contributing to an increase of the problem.1 Mycotoxins, performance-robbing organic residues produced by certain mold species, are very potent compounds.2 Very low doses of mycotoxins in food and feed can cause human and animal health problems, but a negative impact on animals represents the biggest economic loss.

Is Ammo CURB available as a liquid or dry formulation?

Kemin sells two liquid concentrations of Ammo CURB and one dry formulation.

  • Ammo CURB® Dry is manufactured by applying buffered propionic acid to a fine powder carrier. Ammo CURB Dry contains a guaranteed level of 40 percent propionic acid. The fine powder carrier allows for complete mixing in feed and feed ingredients
  • Ammo CURB® 65 Liquid is a buffered liquid propionic acid solution with the antioxidant TBHQ added to help product efficacy. Ammo CURB 65 Liquid contains a guaranteed 65 percent propionic acid and is an excellent mold inhibitor for processed feed and feed ingredients
  • Ammo CURB® 75 Liquid is a buffered liquid propionic acid solution. Ammo CURB 75 Liquid contains a guaranteed 75 percent propionic acid concentration

How does Ammo CURB Dry compare with other dry organic acid products?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) studies were conducted to determine the efficacy of Ammo CURB Dry compared to a competitive dry mold inhibitor in controlling microbial growth in complete animal feed. CO2 is a product of microbial respiration and is indicative of mold growth. Mold growth can reduce the nutritive quality of feed.3

Figure 1. CO2 production over time, averaged by treatment (n = 3)

The experimental conditions were controlled, so relative differences in product performance could be determined. However, the elapsed time was not the same as experienced in real-time stability due to varying conditions.

At each treatment level, Ammo CURB Dry outperformed the competitive dry product in the inhibition of microbial growth. The CO2 evolution data indicates Ammo CURB Dry mold inhibitor to be twice as efficacious as the competitive product.

How does Ammo CURB Dry compare with calcium propionate?

CO2 studies were conducted again to compare the efficacy of Ammo CURB Dry against calcium propionate in controlling microbial spoilage in a complete animal feed.4

Figure 2. Average CO2 production over time

At each treatment level, Ammo CURB Dry outperformed calcium propionate in the inhibition of microbial growth. The CO2 evolution data indicates the lowest application rate of Ammo CURB Dry to be more efficacious than the highest application rate of calcium propionate.
