Why are ENDOX the products of choice for your premix and feeds?

ENDOX brand antioxidant is a combination of an inert carrier that has been coated with a synergistic blend of synthetic antioxidants and citric acid. This combination provides adequate distribution of the active components throughout your feed mixture. In laboratory, the benefit of using an antioxidant to stabilise a feed can be demonstrated via an accelerated test (i.e. the OXITEST). This is a routine analysis at Kemin and the following example demonstrates how the inclusion of a standard dosage of ENDOX D dry is able to significantly improve feed shelf life.

An improvement of 23% in an accelerated test stressing the feed at a temperature of 100 degree Celsius, which resulted in a significant stability to oxidation in feed stored in standard conditions (20 C). In fact, considering the induction point of negative control was around 13 h, and estimating a Q10 factor of 2.3, the feed stabilised with ENDOX D dry will be more resistant to oxidation for approximately 100 extra days. 

The role of antioxidants in animal feed quality—what is oxidation costing you?

The preservation of fat quality in feed is extremely important. Rancid fat means quality has been compromised - but what does that mean to your bottom line?

Oxidized fat may:

• Destroy fat soluble vitamins

• Reduce the digestibility of fat

• Reduce the energy content of the feed

• Reduce palatability and feed consumption

• Increase the animal’s exposure to free radicals, which may lead to internal oxidative stress

• Increase exposure to toxic compounds, which may reduce productivity

• Negatively impact gut health, which can lead to future immunity challenges

   

Solution to preserve fat quality

To protect your finished feed from the negative effects that oxidation has on feed quality, an antioxidant program should always be applied. The program should begin with the stabilization of feed ingredients sensitive to oxidation and end with a supplementary addition of antioxidants to the final feed.

The inclusion of an antioxidant in complete feeds helps to maintain their quality by delaying oxidative chain reactions which are potentially triggered by production processes or the presence of pro-oxidant ingredients.

Antioxidants slow down the oxidative process by sacrificing themselves for consumption by free radicals before the fat or vitamin molecules can be attacked.

Improving fat preservation with an antioxidant system should contain a combination of the following:

• Synergistic blend of antioxidants to absorb free radicals before they destroy fatty acids

• Metal chelators to bind metal ions, which may promote free radical oxidation

• Oil-based carriers to provide a homogeneous mix into the feed matrix

Moreover, due to the relatively low inclusion rate of antioxidants in final feeds, optimal physical properties are also required to deliver uniform distribution throughout the feed giving maximum efficacy.
