TMR SAVOR®
Good quality feed is a fundamental aspect of healthy ruminant production and reproduction. Feeding cattle home-grown forage reduces the need for farmers to buy additional feed and undergo the associated cost related. However, weather and harvest conditions aren’t always ideal making the growth of wild yeast and mould in forage a large challenge.
As wild yeast (e.g. Candida, Hansenula, Pichia, Issatchenkia and Saccharomyces) grows in feeds, moisture and heat are produced through cellular respiration. Since wild yeast consumes lactic acid as its energy source, this loss of acid generates a more optimal environment for mould (e.g. Aspergillus, Fusarium and Penicillium) growth. By preventing the proliferation of wild yeast growth, environmental conditions ideal for mould growth are delayed. Additionally, it delays the heating of TMR caused by wild yeast and mould growth.
The use of mould inhibitors in the livestock feed industry is a management tool frequently used by producers to maintain feed quality. While propionic acid is the most commonly used organic acid in mould inhibitors, acetic and sorbic acids, not propionic acid, are effective inhibitors of wild yeast growth.
As a pioneer in the feed industry, Kemin makes use of blended organic acids to control mould and wild yeast growth in feed. The combination of organic acids in TMR SAVOR® provide producers with control of most major spoilage organisms found in livestock feed.
TMR SAVOR® is a broad-spectrum mould inhibitor, which penetrates the mould cell and disrupts the normal cell physiology (reduction of intracellular cytoplasm pH and generation of anion accumulation), resulting in mould death. The surfactant enhances dispersion, distribution and penetration into the raw materials present in the TMR. These blends are buffered for improved equipment and employee safety.
This combination of acids effectively targets wild yeast and mould growth in feed to help stabilise TMR and reduce heating, which leads to a higher quality TMR.
