CLOSTAT™

The intestinal health of any animal is fundamental to its uniformity, growth potential and survival. It isn’t something achieved overnight. Kemin therefore developed a three-geared approach to promote and maintain the intestinal microbiota, intestinal barrier integrity and intestinal immunity of animals holistically.

Each of these three gears is dependent on the success of the others in order to boost its own. Herein lies the secret to obtaining success in modern poultry and swine production.

Kemin’s CLOSTAT™ helps to address one of these gears: intestinal microbiota.

The role CLOSTAT™ plays in production animals’ intestinal health

A healthy intestinal tract contains a balanced intestinal microbiota of more than 400 different strains of bacteria, including beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium spp. and pathogenic bacteria such as Clostridium perfringens, E. coli, and Salmonella. Under normal circumstances, there is equilibrium between the beneficial and pathogenic bacteria (eubiosis).

Unfortunately, stressors such as heat, humidity, overcrowding, disease and antibiotics may kill beneficial bacteria causing an imbalance in the intestinal microbiota (dysbacteriosis). The result is decreased performance and increased morbidity and mortality.

CLOSTAT™ is a proprietary, patented strain of Bacillus, PB6 that helps to support intestinal health by modulating intestinal microbiota and controlling the intestinal proliferation of Clostridium perfringens.

How CLOSTAT™ works

CLOSTAT™ contains Kemin’s patented and proprietary strain of Bacillus, PB6 isolated from healthy chicken gut (US Patent 7,247,299 B2). It is in the form of a resistant spore that can survive the low pH environment of the gastric stomach and proventriculus and the high conditioner and pelleting temperature in a feed mill.

CLOSTAT™ helps in maintaining optimum microbial balance and improves animal performance in the following ways:

  • It secretes secondary antimicrobial metabolites, with a direct killing action against Clostridium perfringens.
  • Promotes the growth of commensals such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus.
  • Improves animal immunity by improving the phagocytosis index (ability of heterophils to eradicate pathogens).
  • Binds with the common adhesion sites on intestinal epithelial cells, which cause exclusion of pathogenic bacteria.

The benefits of intestinal microbiota modulation using CLOSTAT™

  • Prevents dysbacteriosis, bacterial enteritis and necrotic enteritis
  • Maintains a balanced intestinal microbiota
  • Reduces intestinal and faecal clostridial counts
  • Optimises intestinal integrity, facilitates nutrient absorption, which leads to improved FCR (feed conversion ratio)
  • Improves body weight gain and livestock uniformity
  • Reduces medication costs due to preventive intestinal health management
  • Improves profit margin through reduced mortalities, improved litter quality and performance, and fewer rejections at the slaughterhouse
