The presence of Salmonella in production animals is considered a risk factor for Salmonella contamination of meat and eggs. From an animal health and human food safety perspective, interventions to keep the prevalence of Salmonella low are therefore critical.
The successful control of Salmonella on livestock farms is dependent on a number of things. Good farming and hygiene management combined with regular testing and treatment of positive flocks can make all the difference. It is important to note that because Salmonella lives inside the intestinal tract of animals, developing and managing good intestinal health in production animals can also drastically decrease the risk of Salmonella.
After years of dedicated research, Kemin identified intestinal health as a fundamental role-player in successful modern animal production. The stronger the gut the better animals are able to defend themselves against the proliferation of enteric pathogens.
Kemin therefore designed a three-geared approach that addresses the development and maintenance of the intestinal health of production animals holistically. These gears are the intestinal microbiota, intestinal integrity and intestinal immunity.
FormaXOL™ is a microencapsulated synergistic combination of organic acids and essential oils that effectively reduces the prevalence of Salmonella in animal populations. FormaXOL™ treatment is regarded as an additional measure to decrease the shedding of Salmonella, has a beneficial effect on the balance of commensal intestinal organisms and is a cost-effective option for Salmonella control.
