After presenting customer satisfaction survey results to one of Kemin’s business units, Gracie Wilcox, Marketing Intern, sat down with me at Kemin’s in-office coffee shop to chat about her summer internship experience at Kemin. “I was initially interested in interning at Kemin because of the company’s strong focus on sustainability,” Wilcox says. “And in the end, I gained so much real-world experience and had great exposure to the company culture.”

I asked her to tell me more about the experiences she had outside of her typical work tasks, and she told me about volunteering with her team at Meals on Wheels and with other interns at Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity. “Those experiences really taught me about Kemin’s values, and I met a lot of people who shared stories about their lives, where they came from, and why giving back is so important to them. It was really inspiring.”

The last thing we talked about was what she’d want other students to know before applying for the summer internship program at Kemin. Here are a few of her suggestions.

5 Reasons You Should Apply for the Kemin Summer Internship Program

1. Secure an Internship Early

Kemin starts recruiting for the summer internship program in the fall. Be proactive and get your application in early, and you can secure a summer internship before you leave school for winter break. And that is a good feeling!

2. Find an Internship in Your Discipline

Kemin is a global ingredients manufacturer with innovations grounded in science. There are incredible opportunities for scientists interning in Kemin’s R&D department and Quality teams to gain valuable lab experience.

Kemin also builds and develops engineering solutions for clients as well as for our own manufacturing facilities, creating great opportunities for engineering students.

But you don’t have to be a science or engineering major to find a home at Kemin. Students interested in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, IT, Legal, Marketing, and Sustainability are encouraged to apply for a summer internship.

3. Connect with Other Young Professionals

When pursuing a career, networking is often as important as work experience. During this summer internship program, you will meet motivated young professionals from different universities and majors. You will attend onboarding classes and team building events with the other participants in the summer internship. Building your professional network is just one of the many benefits of this program.

4. Gain Real-World Experience

This internship is not just going to look good on paper. You are going to learn valuable skills that you can take with you into the future. For example, Isabelle McGraw, a Research & Development Intern, said she gained significant lab experience during her internship. “In class we used flash column chromatography one time. During this internship I’ve been able to use this method many times in real lab tests, not just in a predictable classroom setting,” McGraw said.

Other students’ summer projects include redesigning internal websites, capturing sustainability data, using technology to draft CAD drawings, and creating training seminars. Every year the summer internship projects change, but you can rest assured you’re going to gain valuable experience.

5. Experience the Kemin Culture

Kemin’s values are Teamwork, Integrity, Passion, Servant Leadership, and Safety. In addition to following your personal passion to gain work experience, you have an opportunity as a summer intern to take part in community events, such as volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. There are also team building activities, such as special lunches, games, and activities that you will participate in with your department as well as with the intern team.
